Kigali, 1 September 2009 -- Dr Luis Gomes Sambo of Angola has been re-nominated as the World Health Organization's (WHO) Regional Director for Africa.

Kigali, 31 August 2009 -- The 59th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa opened on Monday in Kigali with a call by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda for strong leadership and accountability in countries in the WHO African Region in order to reverse the decades-long poor state of health systems in Member States.
Rwanda to Host 59th Session of WHO Regional Committee for Africa
Kigali, 26 August 2009 -- The 59th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa will take place from 31 August to 4 September at the Conference Centre of Serena Hotel in Kigali, the Rwandan capital.
The Regional Committee, WHO's Governing Body in the African Region, will consider a report on the work of WHO in the Region in 2008 to be presented by the Regional Director, Dr Luis Sambo.

The General Assembly of the United Nations designated 19 August as World Humanitarian Day and it is an occasion for paying tribute to the men and women who work to save the lives and protect the health of people affected by emergencies, whether caused by conflict or natural disasters. Training Workshop on Laboratory-Based Assessment and Surveillance of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis
Kigali, 10 August 2009 -- Rwanda has hosted from the 10th to the 14th August 2009, a workshop on Laboratory‐Based Assessment and Surveillance of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis organized by the World Health Organization, Regional Office for Africa in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. This workshop has been attended by 11 African countries as follows: Chad, Burundi, Liberia, Congo.
WHO hands over anti-TB drugs worth 1.7M dollars to Nigeria
7 August 2009 | ABUJA -- In a ceremony held on August 7, 2009, Dr Peter Eriki, the WHO representative in Nigeria, formally handed over a consignment of anti-TB drugs to the Hon. Minister of Health, Prof Babatunde Osotimehin. The drugs, a donation to Nigeria from the Global Drug Facility (GDF) worth $ 1,75 million dollars, will cover the treatment of over 30,000 TB patients, including children.
Enhancing collaboration on HIV/AIDS Prevention in the African Region
5 August 2009 -- The World Health Organization Regional Director for Africa Dr Luis Gomes Sambo was in Gaborone, Botswana on an official visit to the Champions for HIV-Free Generation.
The aim of the visit was to further strengthen collaboration between the two organizations towards the acceleration of HIV prevention in the African region.
Dr Sambo held discussions with the Chairperson of the Champions for an HIV-Free Generation and former President of Botswana, His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae.
