Brazzaville, 19 June 2007 -- A meeting of the Programme Sub-Committee (PSC) , one of the managerial organs of WHO in the African Region, got underway Tuesday in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

Opening the meeting, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, noted that this year’s session of the PSC was taking place after the adoption of WHO’s Medium Term Strategic Plan for 2008-2013 and the 2008-2009 Programme Budget by the World Health Assembly.

World No Tobacco Day Celebration June 13 2007

On June 13 2007, Malawi celebrated the World No Tobacco Day at the Shire Highlands Hotel in Blantyre. The activities to mark the day were a Public Lecture on the dangers of second hand smoke followed by a Press Conference. The Consumer Association of Malawi was the organizer of the event and the World Health Organisation provided technical and financial support.

The outbreak of the H5N1 virus was confirmed last Tuesday after it was detected on a small scale poultry farm near the port city of Tema at the weekend.

Brazzaville 30 April, 2007 -- The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Japanese government have signed a cooperation agreement under which WHO will assist in administering the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize , instituted by Japan to honour medical researchers and healthcare experts who have made outstanding contributions to fighting disease in Africa.

Brazzaville 25 April, 2007 -- WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, has called for increased support from the international community to countries in the African region to fight malaria.
“It is imperative that we continue to ensure that we collectively support countries to monitor deliverables indicating progress torwards malaria control and elimination”, Dr Sambo said in a message to mark Africa Malaria Day, observed on 25 April every year since 2000.

23 April 2007 - On November 3, 1997, Ron Van Den Berg, promised during a flag-off ceremony at the Obio Health Centre, that Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) where he was then Managing Director, would continue to support National Immunization Days (NIDs). The company has not looked back since then, spending over $1 million to date in support of immunization activities and the polio eradication initiative.

The Rwandan Ministry of Health is spearheading activities to mark AMD. This year's focus is "Leadership and Partnership for Results," and the theme is "Free Africa from Malaria Now!"
Representatives from neighbouring states, international and national NGOs, the diplomatic community, RBM Secretariat and UN organizations have been invited to Rwanda for this high level event. Senior government officials in the country and outside will participate in the official ceremony.
