Botswana Excels in the 2018 National Measles Laboratory Review For Accreditation

Gaborone, Botswana – 13 April 2018: The Deputy Permanent Secretary and Director of Clinical Services, in the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW), Ms Thandie Kgosiesele, today, hosted a team from WHO, led by Dr Charles Byabamazima from the WHO Regional Office for Africa, which was in the country to brief the Ministry Management on the results of the review for accreditation of the country’s National Measles Laboratory. Botswana’s National Health Laboratory hosts the National Measles Laboratory.

Malawi administers Oral Cholera Vaccine to over 500,000 people in Lilongwe Urban

The Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign started in Lilongwe on 17 April 2018. The vaccine is being administered from 17 to 21 April and is targeting all people that are over one year and living in urban and semi urban areas of Lilongwe city where the cholera outbreak is still active. These areas are within the catchment areas of the following health facilities: Area 18, Kawale, Area 25, African Bible College, St Kizito, Chimwala, Bwaila and Likuni. A total of 500,000 people are expected to receive OCV.

Her job is not easy.  She is a Midwife Investigator in Koinadugu, one of the most remote and geographically dispersed districts of Sierra Leone. Much of the landscape here is steep and mountainous, and the district has one of the lowest densities of health workers and clinics, both relative to its population numbers, and the size of its geographical terrain.

Addis Ababa 05 April, 2018: The 2018 World Health Day (WHD) in Ethiopia commemorated by a joint FMoH-WHO press conference which was held on 05 April 2018 at Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia (FMoH). The National Press Conference was led by H.E. Dr Kebede Worku, State Minister of Health and Dr Akpaka Kalu, WHO Representative to Ethiopia. The aim of the press was to inform the media and the public at large on the importance of the occasion. The Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia organized this press conference in collaboration with WHO with the theme “Optimizing the Health Extension Program” and it was attended by a large number of local journalists from private and public radio and TV stations, as well as the FMOH and WHO staff.

Tanzania rolls out vaccination against cervical cancer

Dar es Salaam, 10 April 2018: Today, Tanzania achieved a historical milestone to roll out a Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine against cancer of the cervix, the second most common cancer in women worldwide. Globally, the East African region is the leading burden carrier of cervical cancer. Tanzania is among the five countries with the highest rates in Africa.

The WR also took the opportunity to congratulate Ms Maphorisa on her appointment as the Permanent Secretary in the MoHW.
