Update COVID-19 12 February 2021

12 February 2021 — One hundred, and thirty-two (132) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 4230 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases seventeen thousand, and two hundred (17200). To date, thirteen thousand, nine hundred, and thirty-seven (13937) patients have recovered, including two hundred, and fifty-nine (259) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, and twenty-seven (3027) and two hundred, and thirty-six (236) deaths. The 5 new deaths are male of 86, 82, 68, and 63 in Kigali, and 54 years old in Kayonza District.

11 February 2021 — One hundred, and twenty-seven (127) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 4963 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases seventeen thousand, and sixty-eight (17068). To date, thirteen thousand, six hundred, and seventy-eight (13678) patients have recovered, including two hundred, and eighty-nine (289) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, one hundred, and fifty-nine (3159) and two hundred, and thirty-one (231) deaths. The 2 new deaths are male of 87 and 85 years old in Kigali.

A Regional Partners’ Consultative Forum established by WHO in Gulu district, Northern Uganda has strengthened partner coordination, increased resource mobilization, and created synergies for an effective COVID-19 response.

The coordination has helped to harmonize response activities, foster accountability, and transparency. With WHO technical coordination and guidance, there is now less fragmentation and duplication of response activities.

Abuja, 11 February, 2021 - “When I tested positive for COVID-19, so many thoughts came into my mind, says Usman Sadiq, FCT-based COVID-19 survivor. Firstly, I thought life has ended for me. Secondly, I thought I had brought shame upon my family. I started planning how to escape from the isolation centre. My greatest worry was not the test result or even my health but how people will look at me, relate with me or even share things with me. 

WHO and partners charge journalists on credible COVID-19 reportage 

As part of the nationwide response to contain the spread of COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria, the Government with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) conducted a sensitization meeting with journalists; charging them with the responsibility of producing impactful stories to ensure information sharing that can drive home the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

 Already, WHO has supported the training of over 500 journalists in selected high-risk states, including Kano, Kaduna, Borno, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Sokoto.

This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases sixteen thousand, nine hundred, and forty-one (16941). To date, thirteen thousand, three hundred, and eighty-nine (13389) patients have recovered, including four hundred, and one (401) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, three hundred, and twenty-three (3323) and two hundred, and twenty-nine (229) deaths.

Rising mortality as Africa marks one year of COVID-19

Deaths from COVID-19 in Africa have surged by 40% in the last month, pushing Africa’s death toll towards 100 000 since the first reported case on the continent on 14 February 2020. This comes as Africa battles new, more contagious variants and gears up for its largest-ever vaccination drive.

This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases sixteen thousand, eight hundred, and eleven (16811). To date, twelve thousand, nine hundred, and eighty-eight (12988) patients have recovered, including three hundred, and fifty-nine (359) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, five hundred, and ninety-seven (3597) and two hundred, and twenty-six (226) deaths.

This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases sixteen thousand, six hundred, and twenty-one (16621). To date, twelve thousand, six hundred, and twenty-nine (12629) patients have recovered, including two hundred, and eighty-seven (287) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, seven hundred, and sixty-nine (3769) and two hundred, and twenty-three (223) deaths.
