Update COVID-19 20 January 2021

20 January 2021 — Three hundred, and twelve (312) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 4247 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases eleven thousand, eight hundred and sixty (11860). To date, seven thousand, eight hundred, and twelve (7812) patients have recovered, including two hundred, and thirty-two (232) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, eight hundred and ninety-five (3895) and one hundred, and fifty-three (153) deaths.

19 January 2021 — Two hundred and eighty-nine (289) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 4520 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases eleven thousand, five hundred and forty-eight (11548). To date, seven thousand, five hundred, and eighty (7580) patients have recovered, including one hundred, and sixty-eight (168) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, eight hundred and twenty (3820) and one hundred, and forty-eight (148) deaths.

Juba, 20 January 2021:  Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the first round of oral cholera vaccination campaign is being implemented across the Greater Pibor Administrative Area of South Sudan to protect flood-displaced populations in high-risk areas.  

The five-day campaign from 16 to 21 January 2021 was organized and led by the Ministry of Health with support from WHO, UNICEF, IOM, MEDAIR and other partners to reach 93 250 individuals aged one year and above in Pibor town, Verteth, Gumuruk and Lekuangule.

18 January 2021 — Two hundred and twenty-seven (227) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 2950 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases eleven thousand, two hundred and fifty-nine (11259). To date, seven thousand, four hundred, and twelve (7412) patients have recovered, including forty-nine (49) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, seven hundred and one (3701) and one hundred and forty-six (146) deaths. The 4 new deaths are all male, one of 79 years in Huye District, and three of 78, 61 and 33 years old in Kigali.

17 January 2021 — One hundred and eighty-two (182) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 6395 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases eleven thousand, and thirty-two (11032). To date, seven thousand, three hundred, and sixty-three (7363) patients have recovered, including one hundred, and seventy (170) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, five hundred and twenty-seven (3527) and one hundred and forty-two (142) deaths. The 2 new deaths are male of 61 and 60 years old in Kigali.

16 January 2021 — Two hundred and seventy-seven (277) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 6423 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases ten thousand, eight hundred, and fifty (10850). To date, seven thousand, one hundred, and ninety-three (7193) patients have recovered, including one hundred, and sixty-five (165) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, five hundred and seventeen (3517) and one hundred and forty (140) deaths. The 2 new deaths are all male of 66 years in Kigali, and 27 years old in Huye District.

15 January 2021 — Two hundred and fifty-seven (257) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 5538 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases ten thousand, five hundred, and seventy-three (10573). To date, seven thousand, and twenty-eight (7028) patients have recovered, including fifty-four (54) in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, four hundred and seven (3407) and one hundred and thirty-eight (138) deaths. The 5 new deaths are all male of 98, 85, 74, 63, and 54 years old in Kigali.

14 January 2021 — One hundred and niney-four (194) new COVID-19 cases were identified out of 6063 samples tested today. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases ten thousand, three hundred, and sixteen (10316). To date, six thousand, nine hundred, and seventy-four (6974) patients have recovered, with no one in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is three thousand, two hundred, and nine (3209) and one hundred and thirty-three (133) deaths.

Africa COVID-19 cases top 3 million, first wave peak surpassed

As COVID-19 cumulative cases in Africa top 3 million and daily case numbers exceed the first wave peak, the continent is now confronted with emerging variants of the virus. Revamped public health measures are ever more critical to avert a runaway surge in infections that could stretch health facilities to the breaking point.
